Is there an easy way to cut my dog's DARK nails?

I made him bleed twice and I know how painful it must of felt for him. I can't seem to see where to stop cutting! Is there an easy and safe way to trim his nails without hurting the poor guy?Is there an easy way to cut my dog's DARK nails?
It's cheesy, but...the Peticure, there's commercials for it on TV. It files the nails down gradually, so you can get a lot of the length off without getting to the quick.

Get a pair of nail clippers that have a guard on the back to help you not clip too short. Clip a little and then wait a week to ten days and then cut a little more. The quick will recede in between cuttings. If you put baby oil on black nails it makes it easier to see the quick. If you happen to cut the quick and the nail bleeds you can use styptic powder (buy at pet store) or just use some flour to make it stop bleeding.
I suggest you take your dog to a vet where they can do it themselves. The problem with cutting your own dog's nails, especially if they have dark nails, is that not only can you cut their actualy flesh (which you've done already) but also that the nail clipper provides much tension to their thick nails which creates pain for the dog as well. If you for whatever reason cannot take your pet to the vet, try investing in a buffer tool, rather than a clipper. They are a bit more expensive than a trip to the vet (about $10). Most of these kinds of tools have a safe way of buffing your pet's nails without going too far. I'm wondering, if you made him bleed once, what made you think you could correctly do this a second time around? This is more painful for your pup than you can imagine. Take my advice, take him to a vet and prevent suffering.
well the most obvious way is to take him to the vet or groomer and ask them to do it which is usually $8 -$10....

but of course that doesn't always work.

sooooooo..... make sure you have one of the white cuticle sticks before you start and then cut away little by little until it's short enough. that way if you DO happen to cut into his cuticle then it's just a little bit instead of alot and you can use the cuticle stick to help it stop bleeding. plus - if you do end up cutting him then you can look back at it and get a general idea of how far to cut on the other nails. your dog will love you soooo much more after that!
The best thing to do if you don't know how far down to cut is to take them to the vet to get them cut the first time. After that, if you do it every two weeks or so, you can keep them at the right length.

The vet will cut them blunt on the end. When it files down to be pointy (from walking) , just cut the point off and make it blunt again. It is that easy. I do my greyhound's nails every two weeks and never cut to the quick. You'll get the hang of it very soon.
I have dalmations and they also have dark nails what I do is Cut a little bit at a time, but I suggest going to a pet store and buying this stuff I forgot what its called but it looks like sawdust and it helps stop the bleeding and numbs it so it doesn't hurt as much. They also make these new hand powered cutters that are suposed to be extremely good but I have never used them before. Good luck!
The vet can show you where to safely cut your dog's nails. Mine has black nails also, and I learned to clip them just before the crook in the nail starts. I clip a little at a time. When you get close to the quick, you can see a hole inside the middle; that's when you quit. Try not to make him bleed anymore...that really hurts and he will eventually grow to not trust you. (And BTW...they won't get shorter on their own, so don't wait for that to happen).
well first of all dont ever try to cut you dogs nails yourself because they have veins in there nails which are very sensitive

so the best way to trim ur dogs nails are to go to the local vet and ask to get your dogs nails cut ($5)

but if u dont want to do that you can just leave them and they will slowly get shorter themselves because they get rubbed on the ground and get shorter ( ground meaning outside not inside LOL)

p.s: i hope you get ur dogs nails cut in a safe way without making him bleed again

good luck :)
the easiest way is to start the car, drive to the groomer and let a professional do it. That way you won't risk mangling the poor dogs nails again.
my dog has long nails, and we just go the the pet store, and there are dog cutters (:

it is really easy !!!!
My rottie's nails are black and I don't even want to try so I take him to the vet.
