They are very short now. My hair grows fast, if that's related.

It depends on what time of year it is and the person. A general rule of thumb is that fingernails grow between a half inch and 4 inches per year. (fingernails grow 5 times faster than toenails, interestingly enough)
Longer fingers grow nails faster, as do younger, healthier people with varied, healthy diets. Fingernails grow faster with daylight, thus they grow faster in the summer. Also, your dominant hand's fingernails grow faster.
If you want to help them grow stronger so they don't break...consider a gelatin supplement.
